Come On NAMIBIA Lets Support Local Talent - Maria
It’s only natural that one starts by loving themselves or those close to them before they can go on spreading the love to those so far away, well, it’s in the spirit that former Namibian BBA rep Maria Nepembe called upon her fellow Namibians to show some love to their home-bred artistes instead of showing them a cold shoulder yet they won’t stop complaining that they aren’t any good.
Here’s her full statement;
“So I happened to have visited a few night club in Namibia for the past couple of day. And I must say I was rather dissapointed by the choice of songs the NAMIBIAN DJs were playing. I was rather shocked and at the same time displeased at the fact that in a country where we have so much talent and numerous hit songs, I did not hear a single local (Namibian) track. I have been to South Africa and 80percent of the song list is South African. I have been to Nigeria, The States, Germany, Spain etc and the same can be said. I was in Brazil a few days back and all I heard the entire night was salsa. I live in Ghana and I even sing along to songs I have no understanding of. I have seen in so many cases where a Namibian artist would have a show and only a handful of people will show up. But let Mafikizolo or Zahara come and you will think the entire population of 2million attended those shows. To be quite frank, I believe that we as a nation do NOT support one another enough. I don’t know how we expect to grow as a country if we are instead filling the pockets of foreign artist and we go around mocking our “broke” artists. You bought the latest drake and lil wayne album. When last did you buy a Namibian album? And I’m not talking about the one you put in your jukebox. The problem is not that Namibian songs are not good enough. The problem is that we don’t wanna help each other grow. We have PDK, The Dogg, Gazza, Tequila, Lady May, Dice and so many other talented artists. Why are their videos not on MTVAfrica or even Trace?. How can they make it internationally if they can’t make it locally. My people. We have a problem. And its rather sad.”
What’s your take on Maria’s argument?
